The easiest way to get one early on is to steal it from a red coat. Then find a group of two or more and line them up. Come up behind guy that is sandwiched in the middle then assassinate him. As you are assassinating him hit the shoot button and it will kill the other guy giving you the spit roast trophy / achievement for Assassins Creed 3.
